Weston-super-Mare pier
In Weston-super-Mare, we are working with a range of VCSE organisations, health and social care providers, North Somerset Council and members of the public. Collaborators and partners have joined the Weston-super-Mare Community Network for Health Inequities, established in 2022 as part of a previous project funded by the AHRC’s Mobilising community assets to tackle health inequalities programme.
During the Coastal Community & Creative Health project we will be holding regular Discussion Forums to feed into all our activities. Our first Discussion Forum was held in July 2024 (see our blog on the News page to find out more).

The foundations of our work in Weston-super-Mare
Our work in Weston-super-Mare builds on a prior phase of work to build a local network, funded by the AHRC’s Mobilising community assets to tackle health inequalities programme. The network and initial project focussed on serious illness and bereavement.
During the project, we:
- Created and launched a mortality data dashboard in collaboration with North Somerset Council and Weston Hospicecare; integrated within the dashboard is a database of support groups collated by Voluntary Action North Somerset
- Held the first Good Grief Weston festival (May 2023)
- Provided training on holding Grief Gatherings and the No Barriers Here approach
- Explored existing evaluation data from creative and arts organisations
- Explored social capital and sticking points in the local ecosystem
Please visit the Weston-super-Mare Community Network webpage for more information about the initial project, our activities and outputs.
